Mixed media painting
Sandy Coughlan started painting at a young age and had her first exhibition aged 14, showing a collection of Welsh landscapes alongside her siblings work. After graduating Cardiff University with a Fine art Degree in printmaking she spent several years painting commissioned portraits of people and animals and working as an art tutor and teacher.
A move to North Norfolk a few years ago prompted a return to landscape painting, inspired by the expansive coastlines, big skies and open country side around her. Walking in the landscape with her two border collies and sketching provide a starting point and as painting begins, an intuitive approach comes to play whereby memories and instinct drive the work. Acrylic paints are applied in a variety of ways such as with palette knives, brush spattering from impasto to running paint as the the process of mark making is built up in layers to to achieves a textural surface. Sandy's works often have a visual pathway drawing the viewer through deep perspectives of sky, sea and and land’
